Over the years, I've been asked many times why I only have one Chihuahua/dog. I was asked this again via e-mail last week and I thought I'd address it publicly and then add it to our FAQs page at the top.
Is there a reason why you decide to keep only one single Chihuahua/dog?
There's a well-known saying in the Chihuahua world that "Chihuahuas are just like potato chips, you can't just have one!" and I see that to be true of almost all Chi people I know. In fact, more than a handful of them have 4-5 because they just can't get enough of this cute breed. I can totally understand why. However, I feel that at this stage of my life, one is just what works best for our household, for my lifestyle.
We love traveling and even having just one dog impacts how often and how long we can go for. Of course, travels outside of Canada means that Jemma has to go to a trusted family member and I have to take into consideration how they might feel if they had to suddenly dog-sit so many dogs. For example, over this long weekend that just passed us by, J and I went out of town to relax. I chose not to bring Jemma along because of the activities we wanted to partake in -- it would be very inconvenient and I wanted to actually enjoy myself rather than worry. So, she went to a family member to stay and I knew without a doubt that she'd be well taken care of. If I had 2 or even 3 Chis, I'm not so sure said family member would be so ecstatic to be the dogsitter and I certainly wouldn't want to put the pressure on them :-)
Another reason for keeping only one Chi is because of time limitations. To tell you the truth, I already dread brushing 3 sets of teeth every night (mine, Jemma's, and Tofu's). I don't want to add in another mouth! LOL. Then there is also the time required to make their food (we don't feed commercial anything), individual training, walks, etc.
I once kept a show quality Chi for a breeder and while I had the option to keep him if I wanted, I decided against it for all the reasons listed above. Not to mention the fact that Jemma acted like her world was going to end because then she was no longer the center of my universe :-)
Even though Jemma has pretty much been my one and only dog ever, I know she will always be my heart dog because of
the bond we share. While I still have my "heart dog", I want to be able to devote all my time and effort towards her...and only her.
These are my personal justifications for having only one for the last (almost) 10 years. Everyone is different in their wants and needs!
Will you get a Chihuahua again?
Without a doubt, yes! I believe they are pretty much
the breed for me for a whole list of reasons. I would get one again if I decide to ever have another dog. Why do I say that? Because having a dog is not all peaches and cream...it requires work, a ton of work. At the end of the day, the hard work is all worth it, but I know I would want a break after Jemma (even though she is going to live FOREVER!).
But I am an animal lover and can't ever live without at least one in my home, so... Dog people, please don't hate me, but I foresee myself always having at least a cat! To be honest, J and I have talked about this a lot and we have concluded that there will be lots of life changes in the next few years to come...changes that will alter our entire lives and where having a dog would not be the best idea. So, again for very personal reasons, no dogs for a long time after Jemma who is going to live forever, but yes to a cat. Cats are and will continue to be a perfect fit for us.

Jemma disagrees about cats being a perfect fit for us, but

Of course I'm purrrrfect, what else could I be? Meow.
